How APS Addresses School Safety - Letter to the Community

In light of the horrific school shooting in Florida, we have received numerous calls and emails from concerned parents and guardians wanting to know what measures Albuquerque Public Schools takes to keep its students and staff safe.

 

As Superintendent Reedy stated in a message posted to APS.edu and social media sites and shared with employees, we have asked all of our schools to review their site safety plans which include detailed instructions for a host of possible emergency situations including an active shooter on campus.

 

Here is some information we can share about how we address school safety:

 

  • Our school safety plans include site and school-specific instructions relevant to each individual school, depending on the design and layout of the building.
  • We require schools to practice lockdown, shelter-in-place and evacuation drills according to these site-specific plans during the school year.
  • In all emergency scenarios, we remind our students and staff to be responsive and follow the directions of all public safety responders.
  • Fortunately for APS, we have our own Police Department that works closely with the Albuquerque Police Department and the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office. We have police and security officers assigned to many of our schools, and we have field officers who respond to incidences at all others.
  • Any time a student or staff member sees a suspicious person on campus or encounters a person who is being disruptive, they are asked to contact a police or safety officer or administrator.
  • Visitors to our schools are expected to check in at the front office and wear a visitor’s badge while on campus.
  • We have security cameras in all of our schools.
  • We take seriously every threat or rumor of a threat to students, staff or school. We conduct immediate investigations and take necessary disciplinary action.
  • Anyone who hears of a possible threat to a school is encouraged to contact a school administrator or police. The APS Police Department can be reached at 505-243-7712.
  • We do not discuss disciplinary actions because we are required by law to protect the privacy of all students, including students who may have made threats. However, we can say that students who make threats face disciplinary action that could include suspension and/or expulsion.

 

We all have a role to play in ensuring our schools continue to be a safe place for learning, and it is incumbent on all of us to be vigilant and supportive of one another. Remember, if you see or hear something, say something. You can contact APS School Police at 505-243-7712.
